The Minnesota Wild have traded defenseman Marco Scandella, forward Jason Pominville and 2018 4th round draft pick to the Buffalo Sabres for forwards Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno and a 2018 3rd round draft pick.
The 27-year old Scandella was drafted 55th overall in the 2nd round of the 2008 draft by the Wild.
The 34-year old Pominville was drafted 55th overall in the 2nd round of the 2001 draft by the Sabres.
The 27-year old Ennis was drafted 26th overall in the 1st round of the 2008 draft by the Sabres.
The 25-year old Foligno was drafted 104th overall in the 4th round of the 2009 draft by the Sabres.
Thoughts from the media …
Michael Russo: “Ennis 2 years left at 4.6M Foligno RFA, made 2.25M Scandella 3 yrs left at 4M Pominville 2 yrs left at 5.6”
Mike Halford: “Pominville + Scandella = $9.6M Ennis + Foligno = $4.6 (Foligno RFA) That $5M diff goes right towards Niederreiter/Granlund extensions”
Darren Dreger: “Good move by Buf. With uncertainty of Eichel/Reinhart contracts hard for Sabres to go big game hunting in free agency. Trade makes sense.”
Joe Yerdon: “Scandella the necessary piece there for Buffalo. Had to get better on defense. Pominville making more against cap than Ennis.” … “Foligno was RFA again, but it sure did seem like Ennis’ time here was done. Have to think Boudreau’s system will help him out.” … “No doubt Scandella will help BUF D. I’m not SUPER high on him, but he will help. Pominville returns in the Gionta-type role?”
Paul Hamilton: ‘Making this trade for Scandella is 1000 times better than unrestricted free agency.”
David Pagnotta: “Sabres have been looking to bolster their blueline for some time. Does Scandella acquisition take them out of race for top UFA D? Perhaps.”
Pierre LeBrun: “Lots of chatter at the draft in Chicago between Wild and Sabres and no question Minny kept asking about Foligno…”
Mike Harrington: “A Scandella trade means #Sabres at their senses and not going to be involved with Shattenkirk.”
Joe Yerdon: “Have heard Scandella’s name kicked around with the Sabres since the trade deadline. New regime and all, but a guy they seem to like.”
