The St. Louis Blues trade pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk and goaltender Pheonix Copley to the Washington Capitals for a 2017 1st round pick, conditional 2019 2nd round pick, forward Zach Sanford and forward Brad Malone.

Craig Custance: If the Capitals extend Shattenkirk or if they make it to the 3rd round of the playoffs, and he plays in 50 percent of the games, the Blues get a 2019 2nd round pick.

Elliotte Friedman: If the Capitals trade his rights before the start of free agency, the Blues get a 7th round pick. If the Capitals trade his rights after the season, and should they get a 4th round pick or earlier, then the Blues get a draft pick two rounds after the pick the Capitals get. Ie. if the Capitals get a 3rd for him, then the Blues get a fifth

Craig Custance: The Blues are retaining 39 percent of Shattenkirk’s salary.

Shattenkirk is expected to be in the Capitals lineup tomorrow.

Isabelle Khurshudyan: “MacLellan last week on D depth: “I think it concerns every team. I mean, nobody has five, six top-four defensemen.” Welp.”

Isabelle Khurshudyan: “MacLellan said he met with Backstrom and Ovechkin to get sense of how team felt. Ovi told him to go get someone. Backstrom told him not to.”

Nick Cotsonika: “Capitals already No. 1 in NHL standings, tied for second in goals per game, fifth on power play. Adding Shattenkirk?”

Nick Cotsonka: “I like going for it. I like keeping a player away from rivals. I wonder about screwing up chemistry when things are humming.”
