The Detroit Red Wings have traded forward Gustav Nyquist to the San Jose Sharks for a 2019 second round pick and a conditional 2020 third round pick.

Nyquist agreed to waive his no-movement clause for the deal to go through.

Pierre LeBrun: The Red Wings are retaining 30 percent of Nyquist’s salary.

Max Bultman: “Condition on the 2020 3rd: becomes a second in 2020 if Sharks make the Cup final, or if Nyquist re-signs in San Jose”

The 29-year old Nyquist was drafted 121st overall in the fourth round of the 2008 draft by the Red Wings. He carries a $4.75 salary cap hit.

Thoughts from the media

Robby Stanley: “The are going to be awfully difficult to beat. I felt that way even before the Nyquist deal.”

Matt Porter: “*their already-good forward depth. Nyquist slots in nicely behind Meier/Kane. Sorensen probably drops to LW4.”

Jeff Paterson: “man, Doug Wilson just can’t stop making sizeable trades. Guy not afraid to pull the trigger, that’s for sure”

Jonathan Willis: “Nyquist is a great addition to an already excellent top-nine forward group in San Jose. That’s a fun team. I wonder if they pick up a goalie now.”

Max Bultman: “For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t sweat the salary retention even a little bit on this Nyquist deal. His contract expires this year. It’s irrelevant.”

Bob McKenzie: “BOS believed to be the Eastern Conference team that was closest to landing Nyquist.”

Brennan Klak: “Highway robbery for Doug Wilson. Imagine getting a guy on pace for 65 points and not having to pay a 1st round pick. Meier-Couture-Pavelski Kane-Hertl-Donskoi Nyquist-Thornton-Labanc Easily the deepest the have ever been.”
