Sheldon Souray sent to the AHL

TSN: The Edmonton Oilers have sent disgruntled defenseman Sheldon Souray to the AHL this afternoon. They didn’t send him to their own affiliate in Oklahoma City, but loaned him to the Washington Capitals AHL club, the Hershey Bears.

If/when the Oilers work out a trade, he’ll have to clear re-entry waivers, where any club could get him for 1/2 the price, with the Oilers eating the other 1/2.

“The decision has been coming for some time,” Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said.  “I don’t want to get back to this mode, but was an ask that had been there from the player for a long time, close to a year and a half.  He wanted to leave, and I understand that, and we’ve done our best to find something that works for now.”

According to Bob McKenzie, the Oilers and Capitals have not discussed a trade involving Souray. The Bears are a bigger AHL team, and have a strong desire to win and fill the building.
