The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded center Jeff Carter to the Los Angeles Kings for Jack Johnson and a 1st round pick. Bob McKenzie said on TSN that the deal is contingent on a Jeff Carter medical.
Jeff Carter carries a $5,272,727 cap through 2022. His salary this year is $6 million, $6.25 million next year, $6.5 million in 2013-14, $6.75 million in 2014-15, $7 million in 2015-16 and 2016-17, $6.5 million in 2017-18, $5 million in 2018-19, $3 million in 2019-20, and $2 million in the final 2 seasons.
Jack Johnson carries a $4,357,143 cap hit through 2018. His salary is $3.5 million this year, and 2 years following. It jumps to $5 million for the last 4 years.
Dennis Bernstein via twitter: It will be a 2012 1st round pick, but goes to a 2013 1st round pick if they miss the playoffs this year. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: If the Kings make the playoffs, the Blue Jackets choose if they want the pick this year or next. Before tonight’s games were finished, the Kings sat in 8th spot in the Western Conference. If the Blue Jackets took the Kings 2012 pick, they’d currently be drafting 17th overall according to myNHLdraft.com.
Aaron Portzline via twitter: “The Kings, meanwhile, are desperate for an offensive spark. They’re last in the NHL at 2.05 goals per game, and have been shutout eight tiems, most in the Western Conference. The Kings’ scoring has been especially paltry of late. They’ve scored one goal or less in seven of their last 10 games.”
Curtis Zupke via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi: “Jeff is a proven goal scorer in our league. He brings goal-scoring abilities, speed and at his age … he is entering the prime of his career. We also like his versatility as he can play both center and wing.”
Todd Cordell via twitter: The Blue Jackets are building a solid defensive core with “Johnson, Wisniewski, Savard & Moore to build around. Methot, Nikitin & Clitsome are good, too.” Also have Fedor Tyutin.
TSN tradecenter link: Bob McKenzie, Marc Crawford and Aaron Ward talk about the trade.
Chris Johnston via twitter: Jeff Carter after the trade: “I am obviously excited. … I looked at the Kings at the start of the year as being a club in a good position to win.”
Aaron Portzline via twitter: Jack Johnson: “I am excited by this, to go to a team that wants me and to play in a great sports city. I want to be a part … ”
Dustin Leed via twitter: originally noted in a @tpanotchCSN article, “Richards and Carter skated on the same line eight games last season; two games when they went to Cup”
Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Carter isn’t expected in LA until Saturday. Aaron Portzline via twitter: Johnson will arrive in Columbus on Friday but will not play. Expected to make his debut on Sunday against the Penguins.
Corey Pronman via twitter: “Most rebuilding teams dont take on big contracts for avg players & if they do, they dont also give up a #1 center and only get a mid 1st.” … “Rebuilding teams look for positive value. JJ is a likely negative value every year of the deal. A mid first worth 2.5M over pre-UFA years.”
