- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Red Wings Valtteri Filppula is looking for $4.5 million a season according to sources. That might be too much for the Red Wings, but what if Pavel Datsyuk returns to Russia when is contract expires at the end of next season? “They know that’s a possibility,” said one NHL executive.
Flyers Daniel Briere is in play but may not waive his no-trade clause. He has family concerns. He carries a $6.5 million cap hit but only $5 million in salary for the next two seasons.Devils winger David Clarkson could be a $4.5 million guy on the open market this summer. Would be a perfect fit with the Oilers but he’s not moving cross-continent. Matheson thinks the Oilers should make a push for Sharks winger Ryane Clowe.
It’s clear the Maple Leafs are shopping John-Michael Liles. He signed a four-year, $15.5 million deal last year. The Leafs might have to retain part of salary if they trade him.
The Oilers and several other teams may be interested in Blackhawks winger Brian Bickell this summer when he becomes a UFA.
Blues winger David Perron could become available. The Blues need a left handed defenseman to play with Alex Pietrangelo.
The Blue Jackets will look to move R.J. Umberger and Derick Brassard for draft picks before the draft. Umberger has four years left with a cap hit of $4.6 million.
