Trade: Jets and Sabres Pull Off A Blockbuster

The Winnipeg Jets trade left winger Evander Kane, defenseman Zach Bogosian and goalie Jason Kasdorf to the Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Tyler Myers, right winger Drew Stafford, prospects Brendan Lemieux and Joel Armia (RW) and a first round pick (lowest of the Sabres picks – Blues and Islanders).

Craig Custance: The Sabres are retaining half of Stafford’s salary.

The 23-year old Kane was drafted 4th overall in the 2009 draft by the Thrashers. He carries a $5.25 million cap hit.

The 24-year old Bogosian was drafted 3rd overall in the 2008 draft by the Thrashers. He carries a $5,142,857 salary cap hit.

The 22-year old Kasdorf was drafted 157th overall in the 2011 draft by the Jets.

The 25-year old Myers was drafted 12th overall in the 2008 draft by the Sabres. He carries a $5.5 million salary cap hit.

The 29-year old Stafford was drafted 13th overall in the 2004 draft by the Sabres. He carries a $4 million cap hit and is a pending UFA.

The 21-year old Armia was drafted 16th overall in the 2011 draft by the Sabres.

The 18-year old Lemieux was drafted 31st ovall in the 2014 draft by the Sabres.

What are you thoughts on the trade?

12:25 pm:

Gus Katsaros: “Drew Stafford may be one of the most frustrating players Ive ever seen. So skilled yet never put it all together. Stafford is a great example of exceptional raw tools that can’t be utilized together into a cohesive player for extended periods.”

Gus Katsaros: “Tyler Myers first few steps hold him back. Has to improve that as a defenseman to be more effective.”

Matt Larkin: “So now Winnipeg’s prospect cupboard includes Ehlers/Morrissey/Petan/Comrie/Hellebuyck/De Leo/Armia/Lemieux. Get EXCITED, Jets fans.”

Guy Flaming: “The already very deep prospect stable for the @NHLJets gets deeper still with additions of Armia and Lemieux let alone the 1st rounder. Buffalo’s acquisition of Kasdorf makes sense, they need prospect goalies, and the Jets still have Comrie and Hellebuyck in their system.

Ryan Kennedy: “Kane trade prospect rundown: Armia a big scorer but inconsistent, Lemieux an agitator and deadly on PP, Kasdorf big goalie w/upside”

Anthony Petrielli: “So, a swap of top 4 D with Myers having top pairing potential, and a L1 LW/RW for a mid-late 1st, UFA L2/L3er, and 2 top 9 fwd prospects.”

Anthony Petrielli: “People rush to proclaim a winner/loser, this will take time. If Kane+Bogo continue to get hurt, WPG crushes this. BUF traded mystery boxes.”

Spector’s Hockey: “Sabres are a bottom feeder with cap space, moveable assets and willing to acquire a player sidelined for the season. Unusual situation.”

12:00 pm:

NHL Numbers: “Kane $5.250 cap hit UFA 2018, Bogosian $5.143 cap hit UFA in 2020

Stafford $4.000 cap hit UFA in 2015, Myers $5.500 cap hit UFA in 2020”

Pierre LeBrun: “Word is Evander Kane is ok with trade to Buffalo. Chance for a fresh start. Looking forward to playing major role on rebuilding Sabres.”

Pierre LeBrun: “Not saying Buffalo would have been Kane’s top choice, but he’s fine with it”

David Pagnotta: “Note: Both Myers and Bogosian have No-Move clauses, but they don’t kick in for another year or two (Myers’ kicks in a year before Bogosian)”

Tim Seppa: “Don’t discount Armia as a major piece here. Has taken a big step.”

James Gordon: “I think Myers will benefit greatly from playing with a really smart defenceman in Enstrom, which is what I assume will happen.”

Shawn Simpson: “Kane, Bogosian, Stafford, and Myers are all young and talented. Other common dominator. Very wealthy and underachieving. #PaidOnPotential”

Nick Cotsonika: “Sabres increase their odds of landing McDavid or Eichel — and will have Kane on the wing.”

Chris Johnston: “Ah, a real big-time hockey trade. Been a long time since we saw one of those.”

Jason Brough: “Winnipeg’s a good landing spot for Myers. Trouba and Buff are the stud d-men there. Won’t be asked to do so much.”

Joe Yerdon: “Kasdorf had shoulder problems a couple years ago. Has had a bit of a down year this year.”

Pierre LeBrun: “Canucks went down path on Kane deal. Were still talking to Jets last night. Wpg phoned Van this a.m. to say they were making a bigger deal”

Ted Wyman: “You have to give Cheveldayoff credit for making something happen. #NHLJets needed his support on trade front”

Todd Cordell: “Jets did very well given the circumstances.Myers dCorsi > Bogosian, plus Stafford/Armia/Lemieux and a 1st in deep draft for Kane. Good haul.”

Scott Wheeler: “Armia is a big kid, starting to use it to dominate. Was higher on him in 2011 than Lemieux last year. Put up big numbers in Finland.”

Nicholas Goss: “At first glance, I’d give a slight edge to Buffalo in this trade. Kane is obviously very good and Bogosian still has upside.”

Nicholas Goss: “Evander Kane and Connor McDavid will be two thirds of a solid first line in Buffalo next season.”
