Jay On SC: Craig Button, when asked why has it been so difficult for the Winnipeg Jets to trade goaltender Connor Hellebuyck?
Jay Onrait: “Why is this trade so difficult to make with that knowledge?”
Button: “Well, I think two things here. Number one, you’re dealing with a goaltender. How many teams have a goaltender already in place?
So, you look at where Kevin finds himself. Could he get a goaltender in return? Yeah. Well, he went and signed Stewart Skinner. I think that Kevin Cheveldayoff is trying to address other parts of his team, and he can’t just look at a goaltender for goaltender move. And I think that that’s, that’s one part of this for Kevin Cheveldayoff.

The other part of this, as well, and you say, why does he sit here now, and why couldn’t it have been done earlier? Again, managers love to try to tell you they’re going to help you.
At the end of the day, when the right deal comes along for Kevin Cheveldayoff, and his track record shows that his patience will be rewarded. His understanding of what the value of a player is, will be rewarded. So I would simply say this right now: If I’m a Winnipeg Jets fan, and I’ll say this to the Winnipeg Jets fans, in Kevin, you should trust.”
Did the Winnipeg Jets and Connor Hellebuyck have a “gentleman’s agreement?”
B/R Open Ice: Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff when asked if there was a “gentleman’s agreement” with Connor Hellebuyck when negotiating his contract about the idea of being traded if he wanted out.
Reporter: “Kevin, when he signed that extension, was there ever, I don’t imagine anything was put in writing, but was there ever an understanding or a gentleman’s agreement that you know at some point, if he came to you and decided that he didn’t want to stay here, that you would look to trade him?”
Cheveldayoff: “Well, first of all, you know, again, a contract is a contract in the National Hockey League. You know, period. There are no side agreements. There’s no gentleman’s agreements. You know, the league doesn’t, you know, allow for that.
So, so any, you know, I guess the fact is, any notion around that would not have any merit. You know, that being said, you know, we are a team that has been trying to be competitive. We’ve been trying to push the, push things forward and try to you know to win on a regular basis.

And you know again when Connor came and and asked, you know, and requested, you know, being traded, we kept it quiet. That was partly on his you know request as well. And we tried to you know make that work, and we’ve been trying to make that work ever since.”
