Training camps are just a few weeks away, and the September 15th deadline for players to sign eight-year contracts is drawing near. Some had thought a Cale Makar – Colorado Avalanche extension would have been signed by now, but it obviously hasn’t. Avs President of Hockey Ops Joe Sakic gives an update on where things are.
Not much of an update on a Cale Makar extension
Guerilla Sports: Colorado Avalanche President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic was asked for an update on defenseman Cale Makar, who is entering the final year of is contract and is eligible for a contract extension. He hopes they can get a deal done by the start of training camp.

Reporter 1: “Do you have any update on what’s going on with Cale Makar and his…?”
Sakic: “Yeah, not really an update. I mean, we can continue talking, and I’m pretty confident that he’ll be signed before the season starts.”
Reporter: “There’s that other deadline (September 15th), you know, there’s a point where he can’t sign an eight-year fight anymore. Does that play into this for you?”
Sakic: “No, not really worried about it. I think when there’s a deal announced or, or signed and agreed to, both sides would be comfortable with whatever term it is.”
Reporter 2: “Since the last time you spoke, there’s been some gigantic contracts signed. Just has that complicated things in any way?”
Sakic: “Really, haven’t noticed that. No, I mean, like I said, I’m not worried about it. I don’t think Cale’s worried about it. We’ve been, dialogues been, been great, and when there’s, when there’s an agreement, we’ll gladly announce it. And you know, hopefully, hopefully something will be done before the season, start training camp.”

Artturi Lehkonen and Jared Bednar are also eligible for contract extensions
Bailey Curtis: Sakic ads that there is “no update” on extensions for forward Artturi Lehkonen or coach Jared Bednar as well.
Evan Rawal: Avs coach Jared Bednar is entering the final year of his deal, and Sakic isn’t worried about it. “Sakic said there have been coaches in the past that have gone into the last season of their contract and coached and isn’t worried about it. Doesn’t think Jared is either. No extension update there.”
