- Team Outlook from McKeen’s Hockey Guide:
The new Winnipeg Jets are entering their third season since their move to Atlanta and are still searching for their first playoff contest. Part of the problem has been their goaltending, as Ondrej Pavelec hasn’t developed quite as quickly as some might like, however it’s hard to dismiss him going forward when he’s still just 26 years of age.
Certainly he could have stood to get more support, both in his own end and from the Jets’ mediocre offense. To that end, the Winnipeg Jets offseason acquisitions of Devin Setoguchi and Pavelec’s childhood friend, Michael Frolik should help matters.
While Frolik isn’t likely to be much of a secondary scorer for the Jets, he will help the Jets out in an area of considerable weakness: killing penalties. Frolik helped the Blackhawks be one of the best shorthanded teams in the league last season while Winnipeg ranked 24th by killing off 79.7% of their penalties. Meanwhile, Setoguchi gives the Jets another threat to score 20 goals to bolster an offense that should include strong showings from Blake Wheeler, Evander Kane, Andrew Ladd, and Bryan Little.
That list might include Mark Scheifele too. There’s a good chance he’ll start the season with the Winnipeg Jets and the highly regarded prospect is a strong candidate for a solid rookie campaign.
So overall the Jets’ offense doesn’t look bad and they might even do a bit better defensively too. If Pavelec can step up along with them, this should be the season that Winnipeg hosts their first postseason match since 1996.

Dobber’s lowdown: Michael Frolik – The two-time 20-goal scorer is out from under the tremendous depth of the Chicago Blackhawks. But when the Jets acquired Setoguchi, there is a risk of Frolik being back on the third line. That will still mean more ice time than the 12:31 that he was getting in Chicago. And it will still mean that he’ll get the odd sniff of the power play Amazingly, he only received 9:07 of PP time in Chicago – that’s not in one game, that’s the entire season. Setoguchi goes through a lot of hot streaks, so there will be plenty of opportunity for Frolik to work his way up. But he needs to put the puck in the net whenever he gets an opportunity. A prolonged slump early could mean a quick trip back to a checking role.With Nik Antropov, Kyle Wellwood, Alex Burmistrov and Alexei Ponikarovsky out and Frolik, Scheifele and Setoguchi in, the Jets got younger and more skilled. Lots of question marks, but lots of upside. Burmistrov went to the KHL, as his contract with the Jets was up and he was unhappy.
Ladd has 76 points in his last 87 games dating back to the 2011-12 season, so it appears that 70 points is not only achievable but also fairly likely.
Enstrom has been hurt a lot over the last three years, missing 26 games last year, 20 the season before and 10 the one prior to that. But over the last two seasons, Byfuglien has 35 points in 46 games without Enstrom (0.76) and he has 46 in 63 with him (0.73), meaning it has no impact at all on how he performs.
The guy who was affected a lot by Enstrom being out – in a positive way – was Clitsome. He had 12 of his 16 points during the 25 games that he played without Enstrom. In fact, when Enstrom was healthy, Clitsome was often a healthy scratch. That was something that loomed over his head a lot in Columbus, as well. Not consistent and often in the coach’s doghouse.
