3. Michael Frolik – Calgary Flames

Michael Frolik – Calgary Flames – five years, $4.3 million cap hit

The Calgary Flames have built up a nice core featuring the likes of Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Sam Bennett, Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie.

What they lacked was a good supporting cast around those guys, which is why they elected to sign Frolik (and trade for Dougie Hamilton) last summer.

To some committing more than $20 million towards Michael Frolik seemed like an overpayment, but he’s been excellent for the Flames and has proven to be worth every penny thus far.

In 62 games to date he has chipped in 15 goals (20 per 82 games) and 32 points (43 per 82 games) while playing key minutes in all situations.

Despite frequently playing against opposing team’s top players, he has not only produced offensively, but also made a positive impact on possession and scoring chance numbers.

At 5 v 5 the Flames control more than 50% of the shot attempts with Frolik on the ice and just 47% without him. There’s an even bigger difference when it comes to scoring chances as the Flames control more than 54% with Frolik and below 48% without him.

He has been one of the positives for the Flames in a season full of negatives.
