Rumors III: Capitals, Penguins, Flames, Senators, Flyers and Panthers

  • Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington: Mike Green and Eric Fehr’s agent said yesterday that there have been no contract extension talks with the pending UFAs. Green has a modified no-trade clause. He’d like to stay with the Capitals and hopes his agents can start talks.

“I wouldn’t say I’m concerned at all,” Oster said. “Mike understands the team has decisions to make, as he will as well. It’s just part of the process that teams have to see where the cap’s going, what’s happening leading up to the trading deadline – all different things that affect when teams make decisions to start engaging players in negotiations.”

On if Green would take a big hometown discount to remain with the Caps.

“Those are some of the decisions the team has to make in terms of how their roster fits together with the resources they have to spend or the limits of the salary cap,” Oster said.

“We haven’t really talked about that in detail. If and when we get into negotiations with the Capitals we’ll determine what we think is fair and right based on Mike as a player and comparable players and what we think the market could bear. But at this point, given there have been no negotiations, we haven’t spent a lot of time talking about that.

  • The Fourth Period: The Penguins and Christian Ehrhoff have put off contract extension talks until the end of the season. GM Jim Rutherford had reached out to Ehrhoff’s agent Rick Curran.

“We’ve both agreed to set any further talks aside until the end of the season,” Curran told TFP via email. “It’s important to keep the season’s on ice success in focus and not let the business end become a distraction.”

  • The Fourth Period: The Flames are thought to be looking for a top-six forward, and are believed to be watching Mike Santorelli, Daniel Winnik, Drew Stafford and Jiri Tlusty. GM Brad Treliving may prefer a player that has term left on his contract, but that type of deal may be more of an offseason move.
  • Craig Custance: The Senators will be an interesting team to watch leading up to deadline day. They are open for business and apparently have more names available than the ones that are already out there.
  • Dave Isaac: Kimmo Timonen on if he wants to remain with the Flyers for the rest of the season or be traded to a Cup contender:  “I’m not there yet”
  • George Richards: Panthers coach Gerard Gallant said that Sean Bergenheim being scratched for the past few games has nothing to do with the trade rumors that are surrounding him.
