- Tim Panaccio: Flyers GM Ron Hextall will continue to try to trade Vincent Lecavalier and one or two veteran defensemen.
“Well, that’s an ongoing process,” Hextall said. “You think about it every day, you talk about it every day. But in the end, you have to see what shakes out. That’s certainly part of it.”
One problem with Lecavalier is that he’s due a $2 million signing bonus on July 1st. The Flyers may have to prearrange a trade that ensures they pay the $2 million, and then trade him on July 2nd.
On the blueline, the Flyers have Nicklas Grossmann at $3.5 million, Luke Schenn at $3.6 million and Andrew MacDonald at $5 million.
“Par for the course,” Hextall said of his ongoing cap issues. “I think at some point, something will shake loose here.”
The Flyers would like to add a left winger in free agency or trade.
“We would like to get a skilled forward,” Hextall said, adding that it would be ideal if such a player could move around and help Wayne Simmonds or Sean Couturier to get more even-strength scoring.
“That’s where I think we can improve,” he said. “Typically, when you have two really good forwards, you need a complement player and that’s Raffl. If you say, ‘OK, we can add a guy either there or somewhere (on a second or third line), I’d rather get a down (for the second or third line) because we need some more production from down in our lineup rather from . I’d rather add a complementary skilled guy to either with Coots or whatever that third line is.”
- Mark Spector of Sportsnet: The Coyotes are considering buying out Sam Gagner, and the Maple Leafs could be interested. The Coyotes are looking for a centerman, but they’ve determined the 25-year old Gagner isn’t a fit.To trade him, they would likely have to take a contract back, but they may settle on just buying out one-third of the money that is owed. The Leafs could be interested in him as a winger, and they might be able to get him at a good price.
Gagner has a salary of $5 million, with the Coyotes are on the hook for two-thirds and the Lightning cover one-third of it. A buyout would be just over $500,000 over two years.
