NHL Trade: Blackhawks Move Marian Hossa’s Contract To The Coyotes
The Chicago Blackhawks have trade the contract of Marian Hossa to the Arizona Coyotes

The Chicago Blackhawks have trade forwards Marian Hossa and Vinnie Hinostroza, defenseman Jordan Oesterle and a 2019 3rd round pick to the Arizona Coyotes for forwards Marcus Kruger and Jordan Maletta, defenseman Andrew Campbell, the rights to MacKenzie Entwistle and a 2019 5th round pick.

Thoughts from the media …

Craig Morgan: Coyotes GM John Chayka: “Cap space is a valuable asset.”

Craig Morgan: “John Chayka thinks Vinnie Hinostroza is undervalued, plays at one of the highest paces in the game, and the Coyotes obviously like that he is a right shot.”

Craig Morgan: “League source says the Coyotes will use LTIR for Hossa. Insurance will pay the remaining 20% of Hossa’s contract. He only makes $1M in cash each of the final three years of his contract.”

Craig Morgan: “Vinnie Hinostroza is a right shot, which the Coyotes need. He had 13 goals and 39 points in 99 games over the past two seasons with Chicago. He is signed for two more seasons at an AAV of $1.5M.”

Ken Campbell: “In a salary cap system that does nothing for parity, Coyotes are becoming kings of taking on dead $ – David Bolland, Pavel Datsyuk and Marian Hossa. Get $5.3 million counted against cap for next three seasons and will pay only $1 million/year in salary – 80% covered by insurance.”

Cap Friendly: “Despite the fact that Marian Hossa will most likely never play in the NHL again due to his illness, he will still need to waive his ‘No Move Clause’ in order for a transaction with Arizona to go through.”

Jim Matheson: “Hawks will divest themselves of Hossa’s $5.25 mil cap hit for next 3 yrs and Hinostroza’s $1.5 mil salary for this year. They’ve got room now to get Carolina’s D Justin Faulk in a deal.”

Matt Larkin: “Hawks move out some money plus a guy who was playing as a top-six winger… is this a precursor to a Jeff Skinner trade? No inside knowledge in this case – just a hunch.”

Dan Kingerski: “Arizona taking dead money contracts in exchange for assets isn’t how the CBA was supposed to work.”

Mark Lazerus: “He unloaded Hossa’s contract without giving up any of his top prospects. It’s underwhelming, but it’s not that bad. I think Hinostroza was a solid player with good potential, too, but he scored seven goals last year.”

Mark Lazerus: “Entwistle is the only guy here with even the possibility of a sustained NHL future. He’s just 18, though.”
