Montour has come up in Nylander speculation

Chris Johnston of Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman reported over the weekend that the Toronto Maple Leafs are gauging the interest for William Nylander.

The Leafs are gathering info but it doesn’t mean they’ll be trading him.

The Maple Leafs have been reasonable with their comparables but moving Nylander’s camp hasn’t occurred. notes: “The player’s father, Michael, is believed to be exerting considerable influence over his end of the talks and the former NHLer is no stranger to standing his ground come contract time.”

There was a rumor that Nylander had turned down a David Pastrnak type offer (six-years and $40) but it was denied over the weekend.

Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Brandon Montour has come up “more than once” in William Nylander speculation.

The Maple Leafs may want to re-sign Nylander, but they don’t have much choice but to see what the trade market brings.

Montour is a right-handed defenseman that carries a $3.3875 million cap hit through next season. He’ll be a restricted free agent after next season.

The Carolina Hurricanes are still the hunt for Nylander.

Bruins looking for an experienced forward

Chris Nichols of Nichols on Hockey: Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050 and was asked about the Boston Bruins and if they are looking to improve.

“They are, and look – this isn’t a news flash – they’ve been one of the teams that’s seemingly been in the market pretty much from the start of the year, and it probably dates back to the offseason,” noted Dreger. “And we know they tried Rick Nash as a rental, an unrestricted free agent, last year. They didn’t go as deep as they were hoping or counting on, but they still believe that they are a Stanley Cup contender.”

Dreger continues that they are looking for someone with experience and they have hame some salary cap space. The Bruins also have young prospects that would interest teams.

Dreger doesn’t think the Bruins want to trade Jake DeBrusk, but they might consider Anders Bjork or Danton Heinen.

“But when I look at Boston, I want to connect them to an underachieving team like Los Angeles, maybe. I don’t know what Jeff Carter’s contract looks like with the no-moves, no-trades, all of that kind of stuff. But I know Jeff Carter knows how to win, and I think he’s got enough left in his tank that he could help somebody. And obviously the Los Angeles Kings need to get a little bit younger and quicker, so maybe there’s a trade fit there.”
