The Edmonton Oilers have traded forward Ryan Spooner to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Sam Gagner.

The 27-year old Spooner was drafted 45th overall in the second round of the 2010 draft by the Boston Bruins. He carries a $4 million salary cap hit.

The 29-year old Gagner was drafted 6th overall in the 2007 draft by the Oilers. He carries a $3.150 salary cap hit.

Iain MacIntyre: “Plan is for Canucks to call up Ryan Spooner after this road trip.”

John Shannon: “Sam Gagner was with the Marlies in Providence RI. Will be in Brooklyn in time for tonight’s game between the Oilers and Islanders.”

Thoughts from the media

Iain MacIntyre: “They get a player who may help them in the NHL for one, Sam Gagner, who was done in Vancouver. Fresh start for both.”

Rick Dhaliwal: “Ryan Spooner’s agent says his client very excited about trade to Canucks. Has history with Jim Benning. Sam Gagner off to Oilers. Spooner is natural centreman but has played wing mostly last 2 years.”

Jonathan Willis: “Gagner/Spooner isn’t a big win or anything, and the odds are it doesn’t move the needle for either side.

However, I like it for EDM because a) in the short term Gagner > Cave and b) Gagner is a righty, which gives him a much better shot as a PP specialist than Spooner had.”

John Shannon: “Oilers hope Sam Gagner’s return to the team will be beneficial at both Centre and the Wing.”

PuckPedia: “The #LetsGoOilers trade Spooner to #Canucks for Gagner.

Spooner: 27 LW, Yr 1/2 $4M Cap Hit ($3.1M net after #NYR retained) then UFA.

Gagner: 29 CR, Yr 2/3 $3.15M Cap Hit then UFA. Both in AHL. Oilers add $50K Annual Cap Hit.

PuckPedia: If bought out after season:

Gagner $1.017M then $1.067M Cap Hits

Spooner (net of 22.5% NYR Retained): $1.033M then $1.033M Cap hits

Gagner is $16K less in Yr 1 & 34k more in Yr 2
