The Leafs Nation: David Pagnotta and Nick Alberga, talking about Auston Matthews and his ‘commitment’ to the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s more of the long-term talk and not short-term, which kind of gets inadvertently twisted.
Alberga: “I think there’s a lot of moving parts to this Auston Matthews thing, man. And the one thing I want to know is like, what, what exactly is Auston Matthews committing to? Because last time I checked whether he wants to commit to something or not, he’s got two years left in this deal.
So I don’t give a F@#! what he’s committing to. You’re going to be a training camp. You’re going to be the captain of the Maple Leafs. You’re going to score more than 28 goals for this team, hopefully next year, right? That’s how I lead the conversation, if I were the Leafs.”
Pagnotta: “Committed in the sense of, like, long-term, that’s what. That’s what that, that’s what it should be. Because, yeah, he’s under contract for two more freaking years.
Now, from an organizational standpoint, if you’re not going to be chasing a cup in the next few years, does it make sense to keep him and then let them walk? No. Will you get more now, with two years left on this contract, than one? Yes.
But the committed thing, like that’s more long-term thinking. Because if things go well, they check all these boxes, and Auston’s happy, and the Leafs are happy, and they’re competing, and they’re, they finished third next year in the Atlantic. And the year after that, they’re improving even more to try to chase a Cup, and he’s going to stick around long term.
