Outlook for the Season:
The Panthers put together a successful season last year despite failing to reach the post-season. The team orchestrated a gigantic standings leap, jumping from 66 points in 2013-14 to 91 points last year. Their .555 winning percentage was the club’s fifth-best mark in team history.
New head coach Gerard Gallant oversaw a team that finished 25th in goals for and 18th in goals against. The team celebrated rookie Aaron Ekblad’s remarkable march through the regular season, culminating in a Calder trophy win. Brian Campbell showed his worth as an amazingly quiet and effective defender. Jonathan Huberdeau took a step forward, leading the team with 54 points, and veteran Jaromir Jagr added instant swagger upon his arrival.
Are the Panthers a team trending upwards in 2015-16?
At forward, the team will once again rely on a young nucleus to carry the offense. Leftwinglock.com projects the Panthers’ lines will look like this:
A full season with Jagr skating on the top line should help Huberdeau continue to develop. Aleksander Barkov is sure to benefit as well. When the three skated together last year, the line showed some obvious chemistry. The trio was on the ice together for 246:15 minutes, posting a collective 55.7% Corsi For, move that four percent better than any of the three posted on their own.
Somehow, even at 43 years old, the timeless Jaromir Jagr continues to be a highly effective player. His scoring rates are no worse than second line quality and his possession work is elite.
Jagr’s calm, puck-protection style and experienced play should boost the performance of his linemates throughout the year.
Projected to anchor the second-unit, centreman Nick Bjugstad has shown top-line goal-scoring rates. He’s described as a smart player with strong hockey sense, instincts, and a quick trigger. The 6’6, 220 lbs. centreman is only 23 years old and should continue to develop next season.
With high-level scoring and respectable rates in primary assists and shot generation, Bjugstad is a good bet to continue growing into a very useful second-liner for the Panthers.
Off-season acquisition Reilly Smith offers some interesting potential skating on the second line. He’s seen as a versatile winger who works hard and can score goals. He scored 40 points while averaging ~15 minutes of ice time per game last year in Boston and will likely see an increased role this season.
A well-balanced underlying stats profile should excite Panthers fans. Smith is a capable passer and has done strong possession work when on the ice so far in his career. He’s an excellent fit in a young and developing group.
The forward corps lacks an elite player. Only three skaters topped 40 points last season. But this unit is developing and should step forward again next season.
On defense, the Panthers remain top-heavy. While Ekblad stole the headlines last season, being compared to Bobby Orr for his production and Calder win as a 19-year-old NHL defenseman. Quietly, though, it was the play of Brian Campbell that led this team’s blue line.
Campbell remains a gifted offensive talent despite his modest point totals. He’s an extremely intelligent defender who is creative, intelligent, and incredibly mobile with the puck.
Though Campbell has settled into bottom pairing scoring levels, his possession work is among the elite NHL defenseman. His capable puck management and on-ice direction eases the load on his blue line partners. In the last year of his contract, and now 36 years old, Campbell’s contract status will be an interesting storyline in 2015-16.
In goal, the Panthers will again rely on Roberto Luongo, their even-tempered locker room leader. He’s a veteran presence who still possesses the ability to steal games and increase his teammates’ confidence with his play. Sadly, he no longer posts elite counting stats:
The Panthers are waiting on Sam Brittain to develop in the minors. He projects to become an average NHL goaltender in the future. With Luongo in the crease, and quality backup Al Montoya capable of starting for stretches, the Panthers can afford to protect Brittain from NHL exposure until he proves ready.
Trending Up:
Aleksander Barkov – After posting 36 points in 71 games last year, Barkov is beginning to show he’s a rising NHL star. Playing on the top line with a future Hall-of-Famer (Jagr) and the team’s best overall forward (Huberdeau) will boost his counting stats this year. Look for Barkov to rise into the 50 point range this season.
Trending Down:
Erik Gudbranson – Projected as a cornerstone defensemen when drafted (as so many big, strong blueliners are), Gudbranson has shown that he won’t reach those heights at the NHL level. Still, he’s known for his size, physicality, and leadership. Gudbranson is settling into his role with the Panthers. He’s developed into a strong, vocal defender who is capable of handling bottom-four minutes.
Roberto Luongo – After 864 NHL games, time is catching up with the 36 year old Panthers starter. He’s a stopgap now and shouldn’t be counted upon to be the best player in the lineup every night. His advanced stats reveal a below-average NHL starter. While Luongo is still the likeable on- and off-ice presence he’s always been, the Panthers need help in goal soon.
Trade Deadline Outlook:
The Panthers enjoyed a major step forward last season. Their 91 points was a pleasant surprise and now expectations should be a little higher in Florida. Still, the team will need to get closer to ~95 points to contend for a playoffs spot. That’s only two wins but finding those wins will still prove challenging. The Panthers added Jagr and Smith to their forward ranks – that will help. But Luongo and Montoya are an aging goaltending duo. Their health remains critical to the team’s success.
Expect the Panthers to hang around the playoffs picture long enough to consider adding a top-four defenseman. However, the Panthers are likely to be in the mix of playoff bubble teams, which will hamper their ability to sell off assets or look to bring in veteran help.
If Brian Campbell expresses a desire to play elsewhere in 2016-17, perhaps the Panthers will consider dealing the defenseman instead.

* Different sites have different guidelines for who is a ‘prospect.’ Dobber Prospects bases their rankings on future fantasy value.
1. Lawson Crouse: Left Wing – 6’4” / 215 lbs – After McDavid and Eichel, Crouse may be the most NHL ready prospect from the 2015 draft. Crouse had a breakout performance winning Gold with Canada at the WJC showing his size, skating and defensive awareness. The question surrounding Crouse is his offensive upside. Last year with the Kingston Frontenacs he scored 29 goals and led the team with 51 points. Kingston however was an underwhelming roster without Sam Bennett and the team was ravaged with injuries leaving Crouse with garden variety OHL line mates most of the season. There is no doubt Crouse will stick with the Panthers out of training camp as he has an eight game OHL suspension to start the season to serve so returning to junior prior to that makes no sense. Once the suspension is done and he reaches the nine game mark with the Panthers there will be a difficult decision to make perhaps. Even if his NHL debut gets off to a slow start Crouse as a big power forward may develop his offensive game better in the NHL than the OHL.
2. Mike Matheson: Defence – 6’3” / 205 lbs – After an impressive career at Boston College, Matheson made his long awaited pro debut. Long hailed as arguably the Panthers top prospect, the 21 year old defenceman may need a short adjustment period in Portland with the AHL affiliate. Upon the conclusion of his college career where he scored 25 points in his final season in 38 games Matheson debuted with San Antonio for their final five games and he managed two assists and a plus -1. It is not out of the question however that at 21 Matheson may impress enough at training camp and start the season with the Panthers as he represents a very bright future on the Florida blueline along with Aaron Ekblad, Erik Gudbranson, Dmitry Kulikov and prospect Ian McCoshen.
3. Ian McCoshen: Defence – 6’3” / 218 lbs – The 20 year old is entering his junior season at college and will be losing his teammate in Mike Matheson who turned pro. Matheson is regarded as having a high hockey IQ who is very reliable in his own end, has NHL size and strength and has shown flashes of offensive upside which he is still developing. McCoshen finished his sophomore season with 16 points, a plus -14 and 63 penalty minutes. Looking forward he has been named an assistant captain and will no doubt take on a much larger role with the departure of Matheson.
4. Rocco Grimaldi: Right Wing – 5’6” / 160 lbs – With an influx of small, talented, speedy players enjoying tremendous success recently in the NHL there is hope for the diminutive Grimaldi, who is quite small but has very good speed and talent. At 22 years old the time has come for Grimaldi to show what he can do at the NHL level. Last season in the AHL, Grimaldi produced 14 goals and 42 points in 64 games and in seven career NHL games he has but one goal. He will compete for a regular roster spot in training camp but likely needs to play in the top six as an offensive forward as his size limits his bottom six checking line potential.
5. Jayce Hawryluk: Right Wing/Centre – 5’10” / 190 lbs – By NHL standards Hawryluk is another small winger on the right wing of the Panthers prospect depth chart, but unlike Grimaldi he projects towards the bottom six. Hawryluk is a character player who combines grit with some offensive potential. In Brandon of the WHL last season he scored 30 goals and 65 points in 54 games. If he can carry that offensive ability into the NHL with his pesky shift-disturber attitude he could give the Panthers a Brendan Gallagher type option which is tremendously valuable. With one more year of junior eligibility available to him he should see one more season with the Wheaties where at 19 he should be dominant.
