Outlook for the Season:
For the Habs in 2014-15, just about everything broke the right way.
Carey Price turned in a virtually flawless goaltending performance, posting a multiple award-winning season and cementing his status at the league’s top netminder. With Price in net, the Canadiens have the goaltending advantage every time they step on the ice.
At forward, team leader Max Pacioretty led the team in points and potted 37 goals. He’s become a team leader and is the clear offensive star on the club. Tomas Plekanec posted an excellent 60 points and Brendan Gallagher continued his development into Montreal’s version of Brad Marchand.
On defense, P.K. Subban continued to grow into an elite defenseman. He’s become the face of the franchise with or without the official captaincy. Andrei Markov turned in an incredible season as a 36-year-old, posting 50 points and finishing just behind Subban in points and defensive point shares.
Thanks to team-wide contributions, the Canadiens stormed into the playoffs before bowing out to Tampa Bay in the second round. Can the Habs repeat their successes of last season? Could the team be even better?
This season, the forward lines will take on a different look. Leftwinglock.com projects that the Habs’ top-twelve will look like this:
Only 26 years old and an absolute bargain, earning just $4.5 million per season until 2018-19, Pacioretty has already scored more than 30 goals three times in his career. He’s described as having breakaway speed, good hands, and a laser-like wrist shot.
In addition to his elite scoring rate, Pacioretty is an extremely effective puck manager. His possession rates are among the game’s best. Pacioretty is still recovering from a leg injury and won’t be ready for the start of camp. But when he is set, he’s the main offensive cog and a likely choice for team captain. The Habs rely heavily on their young star.
Alex Galchenyuk will finally move to centre this season. His scoring is already very good in rate stats. A return to his natural position, along with the addition of new potential linemates Alex Semin and Zack Kassian, could spark Galchenyuk to surpass last season’s career high 46 points.
Despite the strong offensive rates, Galchenyuk is still developing his sense of puck responsibility on the ice. In coach Michel Therrien’s regime, Galchenyuk will need to improve his shot suppression work or risk a return to the wing or a lower lineup slot.
Brendan Gallagher has quietly evolved into Montreal’s most dependable player around the ice. His opponent-aggravating smile belies the fact that he’s constantly working to stay on the right side of the puck. His scouting reports credit him with speed, tenacity and a two-way game.
Gallagher’s shot generation is upper echelon elite, among the top skaters in the game. His shot suppression lags behind but Gallagher is a start defensive forward on the rise. For the Habs, he’s become the most reliable three-zone player on the team.
One of GM Marc Bergevin’s few offseason risks, Alex Semin joins the club on a one-year, $1.1 million deal. His underlying stats suggest he’s well worth the risk:
His primary assists work is top-notch and his overall puck management is very strong. For Semin, the questions have always been on the mental side of the game. Can he bring enough energy and effort shift-by-shift to avoid Therrien’s wrath? His connection with Markov should help.
On defense, P.K. Subban is elite in every facet of the game:
There are only a handful of defensemen with Subban’s skill in the game and he’s entering a phase in his career where he is a Norris trophy contender every season. The Habs’ charismatic defender gives the Canadiens a game-breaking talent who can take over a game at any moment.
In goal, the Canadiens boast the best goalie in the world. Carey Price earned the Hart, Vezina, William Jennings, and Ted Lindsay awards, celebrating his unbelievable season. His 44 wins, .933 save percentage, and 1.96 goals against average each led the NHL. But Carey Price has been building towards this level for a while.
Over the past three seasons, Price has dominated in adjusted save percentage and save percentage on high danger shots. He’s elite, in his prime, and can single-handedly carry this team back to the playoffs if needed.
Trending Up:
Zack Kassian – Acquired from the Canucks for Brandon Prust, 24-year-old Kassian is 6’3, 215 lbs. and offers the Canadiens their best power forward option on the roster. He’s known for great reach, dominant corner play, and scoring potential. His hockey sense remains a work in progress. Still, with second line minutes, Kassian has the potential to fill an important role for the Habs.
Trending Down:
David Desharnais – the diminutive 28-year-old is a playmaking centre who has benefitted from having uber-talented Pacioretty skating on his wing. However, questions have always dogged DD about his ability to play without Pacioretty on his wing. Desharnais’ puck play suffers when away from the productive winger. With Plekanec enshrined as the team’s best center and Galchenyuk moving to his natural position, Desharnais will be forced to the wing or far down the depth charts this season.
Trade Deadline Outlook:
The Canadiens are designed to win now.
Recently, Subban said:
I know that for me, I’m getting anxious. I don’t want to wait another two or three years for people to say now you’re a Stanley Cup contender. I want to win one now.
Though questions still plague the team regarding their ability to score with the league’s elite clubs, the Habs are built to challenge for the Cup now while Price is in his prime. Pacioretty and Subban round out a core that is capable of pushing the club into the playoffs again this year.
At the trade deadline, look for the team to hunt for top-six scoring, especially if the likes of Alex Semin and Zack Kassian don’t provide the offensive punch that Bergevin is banking on. The Habs are a buyer again this year.

* Different sites have different guidelines for who is a ‘prospect.’
1. Nikita Scherbak: Right Wing – 6’1” / 175 lbs – Scherbak played his final year of junior with Everett of the WHL, and produced two seasons of over a point per game offensive production. Failing to crack the Russian WJC team was a disappointment to be sure, but may have had some political reasons behind the decision. After amassing 160 career points in 130 WHL games, Scherbak is projected to spend the season honing his skills at the pro level in St. Johns’s with the Habs new AHL affiliate.
2. Michael McCarron: Centre – 6’5” / 237 lbs – A year after seeing his stock rise with a Memorial Cup run on the London Knights, McCarron took another big step forward after being traded to the Oshawa Generals and a return trip to the Memorial Cup where the Generals were Champions. McCarron played a key role in their Championship and with 68 points in 56 games, established an offensive element to his game. Yet another important element added to his repertoire last season was his ability to dominate at the draw after he was moved to centre. He is big, nasty, can skate, has decent hands and can win draws. It wont take him long to adjust to the pro game before he makes his NHL debut.
3. Zach Fucale: Goalie – 6’1” / 178 lbs – Fucale would have liked to have capped off his junior career with a second Memorial Cup Championship. Unfortunately he will have to settle for a WJC Gold Medal. His trophy cupboard is already full as he is poised to begin his pro career and is firmly entrenched as the future starter for Montreal. With Carey Price the reigning top goalie in the world, he will have to be patient however.
4. Noah Juulsen: Defence – 6’2” / 174 lbs – Juulsen had a breakout season in his draft year with Everett in the WHL, seeing his point totals jump from ten the previous year to 52 in his draft year. He began the year as a potential second round pick and a “B” rated prospect, but his stock climbed into the first round. Juulsen is a right handed defenceman who can run a power play which is a valuable commodity in the NHL. He will play a few more years in junior and then see some time in the AHL before he debuts in the NHL.
5. Charles Hudon: Left Wing – 5’10” / 178 lbs – After four seasons of prolific scoring in junior, Hudon had a strong rookie season in the AHL, scoring 57 points and making the All-Rookie team after he finished second in league scoring for rookies. With Alex Galchenyuk shifting to centre, and Brandon Prust traded to Vancouver, the roster is a little less blocked for Hudon. The diminutive forward may still need some more seasoning in the AHL before he earns the trust of the Coaching staff, but Montreal is in need of offense and Hudon can deliver.
