- Joe Smith: Lightning’s Tyler Johnson was back at practice yesterday.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Blues were just $4,000 below the salary cap before they put Patrik Berglund on the LTIR. Berglund had offseason shoulder surgery and will be out until January.
- Jason Botchford: Cancucks Jakob Markstrom will be having an MRI to determine the extent of his injury.
- Wayne Scanlan: Senators coach Dave Cameron is “not sure” whether Clarke MacArthur can play tonight or not.
- Helene St. James: Red Wings Darren Helm practiced yesterday in a no-contact jersey.
- Erik Erlendsson: Lightning’s Cedric Paquette is on the IR, but he’s eligible to come off at any point.
- Mark Spector: The Islanders put Tom Nilsson on waivers, and the Red Wings put Daniel Cleary on waivers.
- Helene St. James: If/when Cleary clears waivers, when in the AHL, none of $950,000 salary would count against the cap.
- Kristen Shilton of USA Today: Former NHLer Sean Avery was arrested on September 30th and charged with criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance. Police responded to a call of Avery throwing objects at a passing vehicles. When the police approached Avery, he became hostile and denied throwing objects. Avery was in possession of Acetaminophen and Oxycodone according to the report. He is due in court on October 26th.

- Bob McKenzie: Raffi Torres won’t be appealing his suspension.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Blues signed Scott Gomez to a one-year, two-way deal yesterday. $575,000 in the NHL and $200,000 in the AHL. He gets a $125,000 bonus for games played and $100,000 in playoff bonuses.
- Andy Strickland: Gomez needs to play in 45 games to get his games played bonus, and the team needs to get to the Conference Finals to get his playoff bonus.
- David Alter: Maple Leafs Richard Panik cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL.
- Rich Chere: Newly acquired Devils forward Brian O’Neill will join the team today, but won’t play in their opener on Friday.
- Chris Johnston: Sean Bergenheim signed with Bern in the Swiss League. His out clause kicks in after their season is over.
- Lou Korac: Brian Elliott will start the Blues season opener against the Oilers.
- Helene St. James: Jimmy Howard will start for the Red Wings on Friday, with Petr Mrazek going Saturday.
