Morning Hits: Seguin, Ward, Setoguchi, Smid, and Ference

  • Dallas Morning News: Stars Tyler Seguin on TSN 1050 radio recently on how he was called out for partying while he was in Boston.

“I think that the real tough thing was being able to keep my mouth shut. That was real difficult. After the trade happened seeing all of the things that were going on. I had radio stations and newspaper people asking me if I wanted to post an article just saying my story and all of that…It was tough. I used it more as motivation and said I’ll use my words on the ice. Then the opportunity arised where I had this opportunity to talk in the Player’s Tribune, which I did in Derek Jeter’s thing and kind of said my side of the story. Again, I think that everything that happened was for a reason. I’m happy with my time in Boston. It’s kind of cool now too seeing some Boston guys, athletes and management since that trade and the fiasco that happened with all the media a few years down the road now and just being able to talk about it, like yeah that was crazy, it was unfortunate, blah blah blah. In the end I think both teams moved on and Boston is always going to be a part of me. I’m happy to be able to call Dallas home now.”

  • Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area: Sharks Joel Ward will likely play on the right side on their second line with Logan Couture or third line with Chris Tierney.
  • Toronto Sun: Devin Setoguchi will be at the Maple Leafs training camp on a tryout, and he’s been sober for almost five months.

“This last year was a long year for me,” Setoguchi told CTV Calgary Sports Director Glenn Campbell in a recent interview. “About three quarters of the way through, I ended up going to rehab for drinking. It’s been about five months that I’ve been sober now.

“You know it’s something I’m looking forward to and try to get back and prove myself in the league again.”

  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Flames defenseman Ladislav Smid is cautiously optimistic that he’ll be ready for the start of training camp. He had neck surgery last February.

“From my point of view, I feel pretty much ready,” Smid said after a session with a collection of pros at the WinSport facility at Canada Olympic Park. “I’ve been skating the past almost four weeks, training all summer and don’t feel I’m behind anything. I can base myself against the guys who’ve been here all summer and feel I’m where I want to be, but it depends on what the doctors think.

“I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I’m hoping. I want to be positive and hope the news is going to be good and I’m going to be ready, but if not, you don’t want to play until it’s ready.

“I’ll keep training and go when the doctors give me the green light.”

He’ll be visiting doctors in California next week.

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: It doesn’t appear that the Oilers will be making a change with regards to their captaincy just yet.

“One of the first conversations I had with Todd (McLellan, Edmonton’s new coach) was about that,” said Ference, who was aware a new bench boss might have his own ideas on the captaincy.

“I brought it up … I like things out in the open,” he continued. “I don’t like walking on eggshells or awkward moments, player to coach, player to GM. This isn’t a vanity project. We should want everybody pulling on the same rope for the Oilers.”

  • Jonathan Willis of the Edmonton Journal: If Oilers prospect Brandon Davidson doesn’t make the Oilers out of camp, he’ll need to pass through waivers to be sent to the AHL/ECHL.
