Eberle signs extension with Islanders

Cap Friendly: The New York Islanders have signed forward Jordan Eberle to a five-year contract extension worth $27.5 million – a $5.5 million salary cap hit.

Salary breakdown:

2019-20: $5.25 million base salary and a $2 million signing bonus
2020-21: $4.75 million
2021-22: $7M million
2022-23: $4.75 million
2023-24: $3.75 million

Eberle will get a full no-trade clause for the first two years. He’ll have a modified/16 team no-trade clause for years three through five.

Arthur Staple: Five years at $5.5 million is pretty good value for Jordan Eberle.

The number still gives them some room to add even if they re-sign Anders Lee and Robin Lehner, but their salary cap space is lessening.

It could mean that GM Lou Lamoriello is looking at making trades as opposed to going the free agent route.

Andy Graziano: Eberle’s deal is a nice surprise. The signing shows that the Islanders are a positive destination for players.

Had he went to the interview process, there would have been a lot of interest in him.

“$5.5 AAV is a ridiculous win for Lamoriello.”

Andrew Gross: Jordan Eberle on contract negotiations with GM Lou Lamoriello: “Talking to him at the end of the year, he wanted me back and I told him that I wanted to be back. So it was just a matter of finding a deal that was fair to both sides and I’m glad that we got to that.”

Andrew Gross: Eberle continued: “I’m not a young buck anymore. I’m 29. Definitely winning becomes more of a priority…In my mind, I like the direction the Islanders are going….I think we have as good a chance as any team, in my mind.”
