Edler and the Canucks talking contract extension
Irfaan Gaffar: It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Vancouver Canucks re-sign defenseman Alexander Edler next week.
Darren Dreger: “Talks have progressed on an Alex Edler extension with the Vancouver Canucks Not done yet, but heading in that direction which should kill all trade speculation.”
Pierre LeBrun: “As I said yesterday, that was priority for the Canucks. Both sides had another conversation yesterday regarding the extension. Both sides hoping to see it through.”
Rick Dhaliwal: There are lots of reports out there that the Canucks and Edler are close to an extension. Have been hearing that there is still lots of work to be done and that they are not even close.
TSN 1040 Radio: Pierre LeBrun on Edler: “The #Canucks are covering all their bases. They spoke with Edler’s agent yesterday on what it would take for an extension. I think some teams have started to phone in and if a team steps up, maybe there’s a list of a couple teams they will approach Edler with”
Sportsnet 650 Radio: Renaud Lavoie on Edler: “I do believe Edler will stay in Vancouver. He’s an important asset for that team – there’s a good connection between him & the Canucks. Just trying to find the right value that’s fair for both sides. Don’t expect him to be traded.”
J.D. Burke: Wondering if the contract the Canucks gave their fourth line center in Jay Beagle the last offseason will become an obstacle in an attempt to cut down the term with Edler who is the same age.
Jeff Paterson: Any contract extension for Edler should be taking into account how quickly Quinn Hughes and Ben Hutton pass him on their depth chart, and will the contract he receives reflect that? Will the coaches see when others pass him, will they reduce his minutes and role?
J.D. Burke: With what the Detroit Red Wings received for Nick Jensen (along with a 5th for Madison Bowey and a 2nd) the Canucks have to explore the idea of trading Edler – “They have to.”
Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks GM Jim Benning on 32-year old pending free agent defenseman Alex Edler.
“It’s trade deadline time,” general manager Jim Benning shrugged Thursday night when asked about ongoing rumours. “I talked to Edler’s agent this morning and we’re going to talk again tomorrow and try to get something done.”
Benning continued that he doesn’t see it being difficult to agree on term and money. Adds he has high value on and off the ice.
