Matthew DeFranks of the Dallas Morning News: Tyler Seguin is entering the final year of his deal that carries a $5.75 million salary cap hit. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent after the season and is frustrated that a long-term extension with the Dallas Stars hasn’t been worked out yet.
“Nothing’s really going on,” Seguin told reporters at BioSteel camp, where some NHL players train. “Pretty much haven’t been talking much this summer. It’s been a little disappointing. I thought I’d have some exciting news to talk about at BioSteel camp, especially this late in the summer.
“It’s been disappointing, but at the end of the day, I’ve always had one year left here, so I’m focused on that. I’m focused on BioSteel camp right now. I’m excited to get back to Dallas, and I look forward to a good year.”
Seguin mentions again his disappointment and that no negotiations have taken place.
“I’m disappointed it hasn’t happened, or it didn’t,” Seguin said. “There hasn’t been no negotiations. It’s just been training this summer, getting ready for this year.”
The Stars already have Jamie Benn under a long-term contract at a $9.5 million salary cap hit. Recent comparables John Tavares signed a seven-year deal with an $11 million cap hit this offseason, with Nikita Kucherov coming in at $9.5 million per season.
Dave McCarthy of NHL.com: Tyler Seguin said he spoke with the Stars back at the draft, but there haven’t been any talks since.
Sean Shapiro: Stars GM Jim Nill on Tyler Seguin’s comments about the disappointment about not having a deal done yet: “No update. We continue to have dialogue. I’m not gonna negotiate in the media. It’s a process and we continue to go through it.”
Sean Shapiro: The Stars and Seguin have held talks at different points this offseason, but there hasn’t been much progress made.
Josh Lile: “It’s just as easy to envision the Stars not having a contract finished because they’re pursuing trades for pending UFA they’d like to sign as it is to say they’re being silly. Calm.”
Josh Lile: “He’s said he wants to stay. They want him to stay. They can afford him. He’s not going anywhere.”
Mark Stepneski: “The media, aided by today’s social media, can be a tool for trying to up the pressure in a negotiation.”
