On the Arizona Coyotes …
Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic: The Arizona Coyotes are one of two teams that are out of the playoff race, with the Colorado Avlanche being the other, and they already have a deadline strategy in place.
“We’ve had some good discussions on a number of different fronts to try to improve our group,” General Manager John Chayka said. “We’re looking at a number of different things. Obviously with the position we’re at, we’re looking to accrue future assets. But we’re also looking at a few good opportunities to just strengthen the group (and) build for the future.”
Players who could be moved by the trade deadline …
Martin Hanzal: 29-year old center, pending UFA. The two-way center could give a team some depth on a second or third line. GM John Chayka has said there hasn’t been much talk between the two sides on an extension. The asking price is high, at least a first round pick.
Michael Stone: 26-year old defenseman, pending UFA. Is a right-handed shot that could give a team some added depth. An acquiring team may think of him more than just a rental.
Shane Doan: 40-year old right winger, pending UFA. He has a no-movement clause, but could waive it. Best quality may be his leadership. Some teams wonder if he could fit in their lineup.
Radim Vrbata: 35-year old right winger, pending UFA. Could give a team some secondary scoring. Has playoff bonuses attached to his deal. He hasn’t had a lot of playoff success. He would rather finish the season with the Coyotes, and the sides have a talked about what a new deal could look like.
Ryan White: 28-year old center/right winger, pending UFA. Could be fourth line depth with a $1 million cap hit. Competes hard. He’d love to remain with the Coyotes.
Anthony Duclair: 21-year old right winger, pending RFA. Only nine points through 41 games, and his playing in the AHL now. A team thinking more long-term might be interested. Potential isn’t gone and he wouldn’t be cheap.
