On the Boston Bruins …
Joe Haggerty of NBC Sports: The Bruins signed defenseman Matt Grzelcyk to a two-year, $2.8 million deal on Friday. Getting him signed to a reasonably priced contract could play a role in trade talks leading up to the draft.
The Bruins could be dangling defenseman Torey Krug. They could be looking for a bigger, left-handed defenseman like Hurricanes Noah Hanifin or Oilers Oscar Klefbom.
The Bruins could also consider moving out a big contract like forward David Krejci or David Backes.
They could also consider moving a couple of blue-chip prospects or young players for a defenseman like Hanifin.
The 27-year old Krug would likely draw the most interest. The Bruins have Charlie McAvoy ready to take over a bigger role, and he’s still on his rookie deal.
Matt Dalloff of 98.5 TheSportsHub: Bruins GM Don Sweeney has confirmed their interest in Ilya Kovalchuk.
The Bruins rely heavily on David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron, and Brad Marchand. If they were able to sign Kovalchuk, would they consider moving Pastrnak down to the second line to spread out the scoring?
Sweeney said that moving Pastrnak with David Krejci could be an option. Re-signing Rick Nash could be another option for the Bruins.
“Whether or not it’s a player from the outside, whether that’s Rick Nash, whether somebody goes up and plays, I think Bruce is excited about sort of the younger forwards and the options that he has to try some of those things,” Sweeney said. “I don’t think anything is set in stone. It’s certainly a coach’s decision, but we’ll have some conversations. We feel that our top six – I think Rick Nash from a size and puck protection standpoint, gave us something that was maybe missing in that regard, so we’re cognizant of it.”
