On Brent Burns and the San Jose Sharks …
Bob McKenzie on TSN: Contract extension talks between the San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson and Brent Burns agents are not believed to be that advanced.
Neither side will say how far along they are, but McKenzie doesn’t get the sense that there is any imminent or even close.
Burns-Sharks negotiations could be intriguing. He’ll be 32-years old when his next contract kicks in and how much more will it be than his current $5.76 million. Burns is the same age as Dustin Byfuglien, who signed a five year deal with a $7.6 million cap hit. It should be less than P.K. Subban’s $9 million.
On Artemi Panarin and the Chicago Blackhawks …
Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The agent for forward Artemi Panarin said last week that they were having contract extensions talks with the Blackhawks. While talking with the media yesterday, GM Stan Bowman briefly touched on Panarin contract talks.
“I don’t think it’s a productive thing to negotiate through the media,” Bowman said. “Obviously, Artemi is a big part of our team. We’re excited for the season he had. We’re looking forward to him building on that.
“And then the negotiations will be what they are between his agent and myself. I respect Tom. He’s a very knowledgeable guy and I know Artemi put a lot of faith in him. Tom and I will work to get something done.”
Source saying that Panarin’s camp is looking for a six-year deal at over $6 million per season. The Blackhawks currently have eight players that make over $4 million a season, including Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane at $10.5 million.
The Blackhawks are in a similar situation with Panarin as they were with Brandon Saad before last season. Saad was eventually traded to the Blue Jackets.
“Each negotiation is different,” Bowman said. “I wouldn’t put any timetables or handicap it one way or another. It will get done when it gets done.”
