On the Calgary Flames …
Eric Francis of the Calgary Herald: The Flames added defenseman Michael Stone last week from the Coyotes for a third round pick and forward Curtis Lazar from the Senators yesterday for basically a second round pick.
Brian Elliott has turned his season around lately and Flames GM Brad Treliving said he didn’t spend a lot of time looking at the goalie options.
“The idea that we were really active in the goalie market really wasn’t real,” he said. “We wanted to strengthen the defence in front of them.”
Treleving also wasn’t really looking for a top-line winger, but was focusing on adding depth.
On the Winnipeg Jets …
Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: The Winnipeg Jets made only one move yesterday, trading Drew Stafford for a conditional 6th round pick.
GM Kevin Cheveldayoff called his goaltending situation “a work in progress” and they’ll revisit the position in the offseason.
Cheveldayoff on their blueline.
“The free-agent world is changing,” Cheveldayoff said. “We as teams lock up players for multiple years, take them well into or beyond, in some cases, their best years. Any time you’re talking about centres or defence, those are premiums, whether it’s trying to acquire them, trying to develop them and certainly trying to draft them.”
Coach Paul Maurice has a year left on his contract. GM Cheveldayoff doesn’t want to have a lame-duck coach next year, so extensions could be worked out.
“At the end of the year Paul and I will, with ownership, sit down and see where the direction goes,” Cheveldayoff said. “Obviously you want the players and everyone to understand where things are at.
“I have no problem sitting down and talking to him about an extension. But we’re in the middle of the season here and trying to make the playoffs.”
