On the Carolina Hurricanes …

Luke DeCock: The Carolina Hurricanes have signed free agent defenseman Calvin de Haan to a four-year contract worth $18.2 million – a $4.55 million salary cap hit.

Mark Armstrong: Owner Tom Dundon said that de Haan took less money to sign with the Hurricanes.

Luke DeCock: The Hurricanes now have their top four defensemen signed for the next three seasons at $19.3 million per season – Slavin, Hamilton, Pesce and de Haan.

Michael Smith: If/when the Hurricanes sign RFA defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk – GM Don Waddell said they were close on Sunday – they will four NHL-calibre right-handed defensemen on their roster – Hamilton, Pesce, Faulk and van Riemsdyk.

Mark Armstrong: The Hurricanes are actively trying to get van Riemsdyk signed, so it’s definitely looking like they will be looking to move Faulk.

Mark Lazerus: It’s looking like defenseman Justin Faulk will be made available. The Chicago Blackhawks should be able to put together an enticing package.

David Pagnotta: Though nothing appears to be imminent, the Hurricanes continue to have trade talks involving Jeff Skinner and Justin Faulk. They are exploring their options.

Cory Lavalette: After adding left-handed de Haan, the Hurricanes now don’t have to trade Faulk or Skinner for a left-handed defenseman. They can move them for futures if they want.

Cory Lavalette: The Hurricanes could trade Faulk for draft picks and prospects and keep Skinner. Another option would be trade Faulk for help up front and then trade Skinner for futures.

Luke DeCock of The Raleigh News & Observer: The Hurricanes should be able to get a valuable asset back for Justin Faulk who has two years left on his deal at a $4.83 million salary.

The addition of de Haan replaces Noah Hanifin who was dealt in the Dougie Hamilton trade.

Cory Lavalette of NSJ Online: GM Don Waddell after signing de Haan and the potential for other moves.

“It may give us an option to look at some other either need for need or restocking the shelves with young players and draft picks,” Waddell said. “But we’ve got some time on our side … so I don’t feel an urgency to do something, but certainly we’ll look at all our options.”
