On the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks and New York Islanders …
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: The Chicago Blackhawks are looking for a winger to play with Jonathan Toews. They may have an ‘itchy trigger finger.’
Bonus overages for Artemi Panarin, Brian Campbell and Gustav Forsling could cost the Blackhawks $3.5 million off of next years cap.
The Colorado Avalanche have told teams not at ask about Nathan MacKinnon or Mikko Rantanen.
The Avs are willing to listen to calls regarding Matt Duchene if it involves legit young defensemen or defensive prospects.
One GM on the trade talk.
“I don’t know why we’re calling each other. No one is doing anything.”
Alex Burrows would have received some trade interest if the Vancouver Canucks became sellers, but they are now back in the playoff race.
Teams are now able to re-sign players on one year deals. Players of note include: Alexander Radulov (MTL), Erik Gudbranson (VAN), Kris Russell (EDM) and Nikita Zaitsev (TOR).
Jaroslav Halak could end up with the Islanders later this season because of an injury, or if there is a trade. J-F Berube and Thomas Greiss are easier to trade than Halak as they are not under contract next year. The Islanders may be willing to get creative to move Halak’s contract out, but the extra year is hindering a move.
On the Detroit Red Wings …
Chris Nichols of FanRag Sports: Darren Dreger on NBCSN last night night talking about the Detroit Red Wings and what they might do. The Red Wings are seven points out heading into last night and they still believe they have a chance.
“Well, they’re just going to stay the course,” began Dreger.
They need to improve their league worst power play and get better goaltending from Petr Mrazek. They also need to get and remain healthy.
“But if they get into February and they’re now 10 points or 12 points out of a playoff spot and it becomes obvious that they’re not going to make it, then you’ve got to look at their roster. Look at their expiring contracts, like a Drew Miller or an Ott or a Vanek as an example – Brendan Smith as another example – as a player to be moved for a draft pick.”
