Scott Powers of The Athletic Chicago: The Chicago Blackhawks won’t be signing Russian Maxim Shalunov this season after he signed with CSKA for three years back in April, but source saying he could sign with them before the three-year deal expires.
“He’s under contract, but at the same time, wait and see,” the source said. “It’s always a changing landscape with KHL contracts from year to year.”
The source added:
“Contracts in the KHL are strange. People can get out of them very easily.”
The 24-year has previously spoken about one day playing in the NHL, with his agent saying 2020 would be perfect timing. One problem if he came to the NHL to play then would be that he’s missing his prime years.
Shalunov put up career highs in goals (19), assists (18) and points (37) in 49 games last season.
“We’ll keep an active eye on him,” the Blackhawks source said. “We’ll be involved and be in contact. I think with any player we want to see him continue to improve in his consistency. For Max, you want to see him win over the coach’s trust and play in all situations, 200 feet. We like the fact he’s continued to be an offensive impact player.”
Since there is no transfer agreement between the NHL and KHL, the Blackhawks will hold on to Shalunov’s rights while he remains in the KHL.

Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Bruins GM Don Sweeney last week updating how contract talks with David Pastrnak are progressing.
“I’d say we are at the same point that you asked me the last time. We are in a holding pattern,” said Sweeney. “I have not made much progress as what I would have liked, but we have plenty of time and the opportunity to continue to talk and we will find a landing spot.”
