Daley could become trade bait for the Red Wings at the deadline

Ansar Khan of MLive: Trevor Daley is a left-handed defenseman who plays the right side. If the Detroit Red Wings are out of the playoff race, they could look to move Daley.

Daley has a no-trade clause but it expires 10 days before the trade deadline.

Daley has another year left on his deal, so the acquiring team could have him for two playoff runs, which could help increase his trade value.

Part two of a Wild mailbag

Michael Russo of The Athletic: (mailbag) The Minnesota Wild weren’t able to land a top-six forward, but from what has heard, it wasn’t from a lack of trying. Teams may have been trying to lowball the new GM. There had been trade talk involving Jason Zucker, Nino Niederreiter, and Charlie Coyle, and it likely also involved others like Eric Staal, Jared Spurgeon, Matt Dumba, Jonas Brodin and others.

The trade value for Coyle and Niederreiter wouldn’t have been high. They may not have wanted to move Brodin because of Ryan Suter‘s health.

Believe the Wild were trying to move Coyle but after a 37 point season, his trade value was at an all-time low. If they are going to trade this year, they may be hoping his production increases.

Organizational needs for the Wild are a right-handed, top-six forward and a promising goalie prospect.

Jared Spurgeon’s contract expires in two years. He already makes over $5 million and could become a trade option in the next couple years, especially if defenseman Louie Belpedio and Filip Johansson develop. Jonas Brodin could be moved if Suter is healthy and if Nick Seeler and Carson Soucy are NHL ready.
