Oilers and Hurricanes talking?
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli may need to make the playoffs to keep his job, and he’ll need to make some more trades before the deadline.
The Oilers could use a right winger and a top-four defenseman.
Believe that the Oilers and the Carolina Hurricanes have held talks but doesn’t get the sense that they progressed that far. If the Oilers asked about Justin Faulk or Brett Pesce, the Hurricanes likely asked for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Doubtful that Chiarelli wants to do that.

Senators and Stone’s camp to talk extension
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Contract talks between the Ottawa Senators and pending UFA forward Mark Stone are now officially able to get underway and a deal can be signed.
Stone said yesterday after practice that he expects talks to start soon.
“I’m expecting them to start in the next couple of weeks here,” Stone said in response to a question from Postmedia. “My agent (Craig Oster) and Pierre are going to sit down here and see where it goes.”
The Senators are also talking with pending UFA Matt Duchene and they could hold some talks pending UFA Ryan Dzingel.
It was believed that the Senators and Stone had been close on a long-term extension this past offseason but agreed on a one-year, $7.35 million deal.
A long-term deal could be in the $8 to $9 million per year range.
“It hasn’t been a distraction yet,” Stone said. “We’re three months into the season and it hasn’t bothered or fazed me one bit. I’m expecting things to get going in the next couple of weeks here.”
Stone states again that he loves the city and playing for the Senators and hopes that he can continue playing in Ottawa.
