Jesse Puljujarvi, Peter Chiarelli, and the Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have a dilemma with Jesse Puljujarvi. Do they stay the course or make deal(s)?

Peter Chiarelli And The Edmonton Oilers Trade History

Dustin Nielson of Oilers Nation:  The Edmonton Oilers look into their past and cringe every time they see or hear the word, trade. Five of the worst in this era include the one for one (acquiring Adam Larsson for Taylor Hall). Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome for Ryan Spooner remains another sore spot.

Management allowing Chiarelli to pull the trigger on another deal has to be scary considering the Brandon Manning deal just this season. Even the Justin Schultz deal for the 91st pick was frustrating. This is because Edmonton has been looking for a player like Schultz every since. That theme permeates Edmonton Oilers culture.

Allan Mitchell of Lowetide:  Edmonton staying in the playoff race is good news but what does it mean trade wise going forward? Sellers exist including Carolina, Ottawa, and several other teams. Micheal Ferland, Mark Stone, and Matt Duchene are just some of the players who could be on the move. Even players like Chris Kreider and Vladimir Tarasenko are not out of the question. Costs entail a first round selection, and/or prospect and player. Gustav Nyquist remains another rental possibility but even he may cost a high draft pick or good prospect.

The scary thought of doing something overbold is just what Edmonton fans should fear. Staying the course is needed but will it happen?

The Jesse Puljujarvi Scenarios

Chris Nichols of Nichols On Hockey:  Jesse Puljujarvi continues to struggle in the final year of his entry contract. It begs this question.

“So now you’ve got a situation if you’re Peter Chiarelli. What do you do with this asset. If your coach isn’t interested in playing him, the player doesn’t want to go to the American Hockey League – he’d rather be traded; then as the GM you’ve got to make a tough call. You can’t just flat-out say, ‘Well, we don’t want to trade him.’ You do have to manage the asset.

So, Edmonton appears to not want to trade Puljujarvi but if coaching paints Chiarelli into a corner, then what? Again, the first round currency for a top-4 defenseman or top-6 forward is just the price.
