Oilers interested in Pageau

Jim Matheson: The Edmonton Oilers would like Ottawa Senators pending UFA forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau as a rental but they can’t sell the farm to acquire him.

Jim Matheson: Pageau would definitely solve the Oilers issues at third-line center. They don’t really have the salary cap space to sign him beyond this season as they have to re-sign Darnell Nurse, Ethan Bear and Zack Kassian. Re-signing those three could cost $14 million.

The price for Puljujarvi

Jim Matheson: The New York Rangers may have been offering up Lias Andersson for Oilers Jesse Puljujarvi. The Oilers don’t believe that Andersson plays with enough pace to his game. Some only think he’d be a fourth-line player.

Rick Dhaliwal of The Athletic: Sources were saying that the Vancouver Canucks weren’t interested in trading for Dallas Stars RFA defenseman Julius Honka.

Sources were also saying that the Canucks weren’t interested in Edmonton Oilers RFA forward Jesse Puljujarvi. Had the Canucks been interested in Puljujarvi, the Oilers would have likely wanted Vasili Podkolzin or Tyler Madden, which the Canucks wouldn’t have been interested in doing.

Kaprizov eyeing the NHL

Aivis Kalnins: Though there is still lots to discuss, Kirill Kaprizov has liked what he’s heard from the Minnesota Wild and has committed to playing in the NHL in the near future.

Canadiens meet with Romanov

TSN Hockey: Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin has met with KHL defenseman Alexander Romanov about the possibility of playing for the Canadiens next season.

Options for the Canadiens

Eric Engels of Sportsnet: Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin may have his hands tied when it comes to making an impactful trade to help turn their season around. To acquire any impactful player you have to pay a significant price as no team is willing to throw another team a bone at this time of year.

Another option is to make a coaching change. notes: “To make one purely for a spark is as lousy a reason as you can find, but for a GM in such a precarious position it’s an option that becomes harder and harder to ignore.”
