On the Philadelphia Flyers …
Chris Nichols of FanRag Sports: Elliotte Friedman was on Sportsnet 960 and was talking about Philadelphia Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds. Friedman notes that Simmonds is playing hurt and many teams would love to have him, but one issue is how injured is he.
“And No. 2, I think there’s some teams out there who really believe Philadelphia will do anything to prevent having to trade that guy.
“So I don’t know how much I’m putting stock in what Philadelphia wants to do with Wayne Simmonds.”
On the Pittsburgh Penguins …
Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Minnesota Wild made forward Matt Cullen a healthy scratch last night. Penguins GM Jim Rutherford could make a call for the 41-year old forward.
Cullen signed with Wild this offseason, and the Penguins weren’t able to properly fill his leadership and versatility in the lineup. Cullen is a bottom-six center that can move into the top-six if an injury occurs. The Penguins don’t have someone that can do that.
The Penguins wouldn’t have an issue taking on his $1 million salary and $700,000 in potential bonuses.
There has been no indication that the Penguins have/will contact the Wild about Cullen, and Wild may not be interested in moving Cullen. Cullen may also not be interested in moving on from Minnesota. He signed with the Wild to get his family settled.
“I’m 40 years old now,” Cullen said when he signed with the Wild. “It’s time to settle the family down at home. … Being able to play at home was a special opportunity at this point in my life where I kind of could keep the kids at home, let them start planting some roots and settle in.”
