NHL Rumors: Florida Panthers and the Boston Bruins

On the Florida Panthers …

Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: A lot of the Florida Panthers young core are locked up to long-term deals. General manager/coach Tom Rowe said that though they may not be playing for NHL jobs down the stretch, they could be playing for a possible change of address.

“Just because guys don’t have contracts, doesn’t mean they can’t get traded either,” Rowe said before the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday at the Air Canada Centre. “They got to perform. Last night was unacceptable. We beat Chicago 7-0 playing good, then we got into Buffalo for a very, very big game and we come up with a 4-2 loss and they didn’t compete the way they were supposed to.

“At the end of the day, contracts are great. We did it for salary-cap reasons, but it doesn’t mean guys are going to retire if they keep playing like they did.”

Forward Jonathan Marchessault, who signed to a two-year, $1.5 million deal last offseason, has a team high 29 goals and is eligible for an extension after July 1st. When asked if Marchessault would get a long-term extension, Rowe said they would talk about it after the season and added (while smiling)

“We’ve done enough extensions. Maybe a two-year extension, that’s it.”

On the Boston Bruins …

Bob McKenzie: The Bruins and defenseman Charlie McAvoy are working on an amateur tryout that could have him paying in Providence by the weekend.

Joe Haggerty: Have said before, the Bruins don’t plan on have McAvoy play in the NHL this season, that will happen next year.

Joe Haggerty: Tuukka Rask on the media scutiny that has that has occurred the past few days:  “I havent , but I’m sure they’ve been very nice to me. I dont listen & I dont read it”
