On the New York Islanders …
Arthur Staple: Some thoughts on the Islanders and their goaltending situation. Don’t think that there is much of a trade market for Jaroslav Halak due to his salary and that he has one year left on his deal. The Islanders haven’t received any trade offers for Halak yet. Think that Islanders GM Garth Snow offering Halak to all teams may have been a shot at Halak’s agent Allan Walsh for going to twitter about his clients unhappiness. J-F Berbue doesn’t have a lot of trade value due to his lack of work. They don’t want to trade Thomas Greiss because of his value to the team. The situation isn’t likely to change in the short-term.
Joe McDonald of ESPN: The Islanders should trade Halak, but his contract is a problem. He’s owed $4.75 million this year and $5 million next season.
On the Goalie Market …
Luke Fox of Sportsnet: The LA Kings and Boston Bruins are looking at the goalie trade market and could also be waiting for one to hit the waiver wire.
The Ottawa Senators, Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres and Anaheim Ducks have dealt with some goalie issues.
The San Jose Sharks could be another team – if Martin Jones stumbles, they only have a 27-year old rookie Aaron Dell, who has a 1-0-0 career record.
The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders are carrying three goaltenders. The Bruins could be keeping an eye on Penguins Mike Condon.
“Not to put him on waivers, for that exact reason — but not just for that reason. We like him,” said Rutherford, who is open to moving Condon in a deal that makes sense.
“The only way Mike will be put on waivers is if we get in roster trouble, but right now we’re just going with the three goalies.”
The Florida Panthers have Roberto Luongo and James Reimer on their roster, with Reto Berra in the AHL. Panthers GM Dale Tallon when asked if he’d be willing to move one of his goalies.
“That’s something I wouldn’t divulge,” Tallon said, “but when you have depth at one position, there’s always a need.”
