Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Teams that don’t acquire Martin Hanzal could turn to Brian Boyle. The Lightning may be in a holding pattern for now. Boyle could be a last minute deal.
Devils pending free agents defenseman Kyle Quincey and P.A. Parenteau will likely get dealt if the Devils fall out of playoff contention. Quincey is a left shot playing on the right side, and he carries a $1.25 million cap hit.
The Devils have 10 draft picks already and will likely add to that. They could use some of those picks to help fill some needs this offseason.
The Calgary Flames are looking for a top-nine scoring forward and a defenseman. The Flames could look for a young, top-four defenseman with term this offseason.
The Toronto Maple Leafs won’t mortgage future for a short-term fix. They have $13.5 million in LTIR cap space if they want to use it.
Not much talk coming out of San Jose.
On the Washington Capitals …
Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post: The Capitals could be leaning towards standing pat at the trade deadline. The time it takes new additions to acclimatize to a new team may not happen in time.
“We get guys at the trade deadline every year, and it takes guys a while to assimilate to your team and your culture,” Capitals Coach Barry Trotz said last month. “. . . Maybe you don’t have to tinker as much because you can get stuff done in the summer.”
Offseason additions of Lars Eller and Brett Connolly are clicking now after a slow start to the season as they adjusted to their new team.
