- Tom Gulitti of The Record: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and Martin Brodeur have a “mutual understanding” that it’s best for both sides that he play elsewhere next season.
“I think Marty and I have come to an agreement that is both best for himself and the organization and in saying that there is nothing negative in that comment,” Lamoriello said during today’s media conference call to announce Andy Greene’s contract extension. “It’s a progression thing – that is Marty knowing what it is to be a No. 1 goaltender and to have that feeling and that’s exactly what he feels Cory needs. We feel the same way. We went through one year a different way. So, I think it’s time to go forward, but never negate what Marty has brought nor was the door ever shut. It was a mutual understanding of what’s best for both parties and Marty will always be a Devil.
“The communication is still there, recently, and will always be there. So, I don’t want anything misread as far as, ‘Did we shut the door? Didn’t we shut the door?’ It’s just a mutual understanding.”
The Devils would still like to re-sign UFA Ryan Carter, but things are “status quo” when it comes to that. It could take a little longer to re-sign RFA Eric Gelinas as there is no pressure to get a deal done right away.
- Scott Powers of ESPN Chicago: It’s unlikely that Kevin Hayes will sign with the Blackhawks before the August 15th deadline.
“We’re likely going to wait until Aug. 16 and see where things are at that point,” agent Robert Murray said. “It’s absolutely nothing against the Blackhawks. We just feel this gives Kevin some options.
“This has been a difficult decision for Kevin. He’s identified himself with the Blackhawks. He was drafted by them. His brother played for them. But after his college career, he had a chance to step back and look at everything.”
