NHL Rumors III: The Jets and Penguins

  • Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets could look to make a few changes before training camp, but it’s looking like the current group will be heading to training camp. Bringing in a center was their top offseason priority and they brought in Mathieu Perreault to replace Olli Jokinen. It was expected that they would replace top-nine forward Devin Setoguchi, but that hasn’t happened yet. Options to file a top-nine role could be Dustin Penner or Kevin Hayes if he doesn’t sign with the Blackhawks. The Jets could look at teams who are looking to trade a little salary to get to or under the cap.

“As the summer unfolds, there’s probably going to be a quiet period where not much is happening in the hockey world but in the background, there’s always something going on,” Cheveldayoff said earlier this week during a conference call to announce the signing of Michael Frolik. “We’ll see where different things (fall), as far as maybe trades or different things that come into play to acquire different people.”

  • Josh Yohe: The Penguins have about $4.2 million in salary cap space left, with Brandon Sutter left to re-sign.
  • Shelly Anderson: Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said that Sutter is their last pressing issues this offseason. They could look at signing or bringing in some others on a tryout. Rutherford added that contract talks with Sutter are “moving in the right direction. By next week we might be able to get something done.”
  • Josh Yohe: Penguins GM Jim Rutherford only salary cap concern is their lack of “wiggle room” once the season starts.
