Teams continue to show interest in Kiefer Sherwood
The Fourth Period: The Vancouver Canucks continue to talk to teams about pending UFA forward Kiefer Sherwood.
Elliotte Friedman reported on the weekend that the Canucks recently gave Sherwood an offer, the sides spoke last week, and a gap remains. A source said there was a pitch made as part of the talks, but it was not considered a formal offer.
Some of the interested teams include the Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. David Pagnotta reported the Tampa Bay Lightning did have some interest, but are no longer in the mix.
NHL Rumors: Jets, Flames, Avalanche, and Sharks
It’s not known what numbers the Canucks and Sherwood have discussed, but it’s believed he’s looking for a four or five-year deal at at least $5 million a season.
Kiefer Sherwood has more trade value now than after he signs an extension
Thomas Drance of The Athletic: The Vancouver Canucks have signed some pending free agents recently – Max Sasson and Linus Karlsson – so it shouldn’t be a surprise they they held some talks with Kiefer Sherwood as part of their due diligence. Throw him a team-friendly offer and see what he says.
Even if the sides hold more talks, it’s more likely that he will be traded by the March 6th trade deadline. A contender is likely to step up and make a big offer by the deadline.
Some think they could keep a player like Sherwood, as he’s physical and can score. He is 30, though, and they already have some higher-priced wingers in the age range – Conor Garland, Brock Boeser, and Jake DeBrusk. What if they move one or two of those wingers? Logic suggests that Sherwood remains the player they should move.
NHL Rumors: Predators, Devils, Canucks, Stars and Bruins
Sherwood’s $1.5 million cap hit holds a lot of value. Even if he’s signed to a team-friendly extension, his trade value would likely be less than it is now.
