TSN: Darren Dreger on TSN commented on if the Winnipeg Jets could trade Jacob Trouba because a potential salary cap crunch as some other players will also be needing big contracts.
Dreger notes that it’s a long shot that the Jets would trade Trouba before the trade deadline as he’s too valuable to them in a Stanley Cup run, which is what they are focusing on this season.
“But look, a lot of what we do is focus on contract work around NHL players. You know Jacob Trouba is a restricted free agent at the end of this year. He can go through arbitration again, so the Winnipeg Jets would control his future for this season and potentially next so you’ve got Trouba, you’ve got Myers, you’ve got some other pieces that general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is going to have to address.
What might fuel some speculation around Winnipeg is that his agent, Kurt Overhardt, is expected to meet with Cheveldayoff here in Winnipeg prior to Wednesday’s game against the Leafs, but he’s also meeting with Kyle Dubas of the Toronto Maple Leafs as well.”
Chris Nichols of Nichols on Hockey: Bob McKenzie was NBCSN before last night’s game between the Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs and was asked about Jacob Trouba and his future with the Jets. McKenzie notes that it is something that nobody has an answer to.
He’s had the opportunity to sign long-term deals with the team and they haven’t been able to get anything done. McKenzie adds that there are some who believe that he’d rather sign a long-term deal with an American team and not the Jets.
“He’s playing lights-out right now. But if he’s not signed long-term to a deal this summer, I think the writing is on the wall. He’s going to be a year away from unrestricted free agency after this season. It is interesting – Kurt Overhardt, his Denver-based agent, is in Winnipeg for this game tonight, and no doubt will be talking to Kevin Cheveldayoff about Trouba’s future, but also other players he represents on the team like Andrew Copp and Nic Petan as well.
“But this is going to be the summer that defines whether Jacob Trouba is a long-term Jet, which a lot of people doubt is going to happen, or whether the Jets are better – a year before he’s unrestricted – to try and trade him and move on somewhere else.”
