Jaromir Jagr looking to get healthy …
Michael Langr of NHL.com: Jaromir Jagr practiced for the first time yesterday with the Czech team he owns and isn’t focusing on an NHL comeback just yet.
“Quite frankly I didn’t look into anything. The only thing I care about is to get well and get in shape as quickly as possible,” Jagr said.
Jagr has been focusing on rehabbing a knee injury he’s dealt with since last year. As of this past April he hoped of an NHL return, but he now he just wants to gain enough strength in his knee and legs to play for Kladno this season.
“I believe I can get my body to the state to be able to play games before the season starts. At least that’s my plan,” Jagr said. “I don’t want to think too far ahead. The question if I’m able to play is still there. Let’s see what happens in those two months.”
Answering some questions regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs …
James Mirtle of The Athletic: (mailbag) believes defenseman Jake Gardiner will start the season with the Maple Leafs. If the Leafs feel Travis Dermott becomes top-four ready, and with Gardiner possibly looking for an extension at over $6 million per, he could become expendable at some point.
“It only makes sense to move Gardiner if (a) you don’t want to meet his contract demands, (b) Dermott is ready and (c) you get a good return that doesn’t impact your ability to win now.”
From understanding the Senators may have an “anybody but Toronto” feeling with regards to any Erik Karlsson trade. No idea if they’d consider it in a three-team deal. The Leafs being able to take on $11 million extension for him may not be possible.
Too much is being made of the Maple Leafs needing to trade for a top defenseman. Morgan Rielly is close to being a No. 1. Gardiner is a top-four, and Dermott is close to being one. The right side of the Leafs blue line is an area of weakness, and it would make sense to make a move if they can.
Connor Brown has two years left on his deal at $2.1 million, is versatile, and can play on special teams. Makes more sense to keep him.
