Jets and Morrissey have talked contract extension

Scott Billeck: Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey has said that they’ve had preliminary contract extension talks. He’s looking to remain in Winnipeg long-term.

He would be a restricted free agent next offseason with arbitration rights.

Scott Billeck: Morrissey said there had been extension talks throughout the summer and during the last few weeks.

Scott Billeck: Morrissey: “I still have another year left on this deal,” he said. “It doesn’t really matter, I guess, if the deal gets done any time before you walk into the arbitration room, if that was something that was going to happen.

“But I’m hopeful and I would like to get it done and I would like to be playing here in Winnipeg. I just feel like it’s a great fit for me as a player and a person.”

Capitals trade candidates

J.J. Regan of NBC Sports: Washington Capitals GM Brian MacLellan has said that they may need to moving someone out before the start of the season. The Capitals are still in a win mode, so they need to move out salary that will not hinder their chances too much.

They likely are not interested in trading a top-six forward or top-four defenseman. Trading Dmitry Orlov should not be an option as they don’t have an option to replace him just yet.

Potential trade candidates for the Capitals.

Chandler Stephenson – He wouldn’t carry an NHL cap hit if playing the AHL, which is where he could end up starting the season. He may not hold a lot of value for other teams. Teams may wait for the Capitals to place on waivers and claim for free.

Travis Boyd – Could have some value as a third-line player and he may not fit into the Caps plans. Only makes $800,000 so wouldn’t bring as much cap relief as they’d like.

Brendan Leipsic – They just signed him, his $700,000 provides little relief and there isn’t much trade value.

Radko Gudas – The Capitals targeted Gudas in the Matt Niskanen trade, so a trade is unlikely.

Christian Djoos – Carries a $1.25 million cap hit which may be too high for some. He is in the final year of his deal though. Struggled last year after a good year previously.

Jonas Siegenthaler – Has good size and speed and on a good deal at $715,000. Not an asset to trade away.
