Talks appear to be quiet, but moves could still happen

Matt Larkin of The Hockey News: Trade talk has grown quiet lately. Players like Erik Karlsson and Max Pacioretty could be moved at any point between now and the 2019 trade deadline.

The Carolina Hurricanes have already made a big trade this offseason and could still move out defenseman Justin Faulk and forward Jeff Skinner.

The 26-year old Faulk has two years left on his deal at a $4.83 million cap hit and has no trade protection. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the market for a right-handed defenseman, but the Chicago Blackhawks may be the team to watch.

The Blackhawks could also use some scoring help up front. The Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers are other teams that could be looking for scoring.

The Hurricanes could use a top center, but it’s unlikely they’d able to acquire one a trade for Faulk or Skinner. Prospects and/picks would be the likely return.

Stars and Seguin talking contract extension

Mark Stepneski of NHL.com: Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin has a year left on his contract at $5.75 million, and contract extension talks continue according to GM Jim Nill.

“We’ve had continued dialogue,” Nill said. “They’ve got where they think they should be and we’ve presented where we think we should be, and we just continue to discuss.”

Nill adds that talks are not just about the dollar amount and term. Things like signing bonuses and lockout protections are discussed.

When ask, Nill said they are hopeful that an extension is in place before the start of the season but it’s not a reason to panic if a deal isn’t done.

Erik Karlsson trade speculation has quieted recently, but Nill says that trade talks with other teams continue.

“I can’t name things, but there is still lots out there,” Nill said. “We’re talking to teams. There is still a lot of movement happening within the business. I can’t say there is anything happening overnight, but there is a lot of dialogue still.”
