Maple Leafs kicking tires on Glendening again
Frank Seravalli of TSN: It is believed that the Toronto Maple Leafs are kicking tires on Detroit Red Wings center Luke Glendening again this season. Glendening is a favorite of Leafs coach Mike Babcock from his days in Detroit.
The Red Wings had asked for a second-round draft pick from the Maple Leafs last year, which was obviously too much for then GM Lou Lamoriello.
How much would of an upgrade is Glendening over Frederik Gauthier and is contract to big for the Leafs?
Glendening has two years left at $1.8 million but the Red Wings could retain salary.
Canucks-Edler talks are quiet
Rick Dhaliwal: Have been hearing that things are quiet with regards to contract talks between the Vancouver Canucks and pending free agent defenseman Alex Edler. Do not think that his injury plays any role in contract talks.
Panthers could be buyers
Rory Boylen of Sportsnet: The Florida Panthers are back a bit in the playoff race but they may be buyers at the deadline – depending on the cost.
Both of recently acquired Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan could be traded by the deadline.
“We’re not going to sit still,” Panthers GM Dale Tallon said just before finishing the trade with Pittsburgh. “We know we have a lot of good players. We have a lot of good players coming. That’s the message we’ve been preaching. We have a plan, we’re committed to winning, (owner Vinnie Viola) has given us all the tools to be successful and we’re going to do here in the next month all the things necessary to win championships down the road.”
The Panthers are going to need an upgrade in net if they want to get back in the championship hunt in the upcoming years.
The Panthers could be exploring the idea of trading for Sergei Bobrovsky before he hits free agency, though retaining the assets and waiting until July 1st makes sense.
Larry Brooks tweeted this week that the Panthers could offer Brassard in a package for Bobrovsky – a move would then allow the Panthers to offer eight years to Bobrovsky.
If the Blue Jackets did move Bobrovsky to anyone, they would need a reliable goalie in return.
The Panthers could offer a top prospect in Grigori Denisenko, Aleksi Heponiemi, or Owen Tippett. Elliotte Friedman noted that winger Mike Hoffman could be available.
