The Montreal Canadiens looked at multiple things at that deadline, but spent more time on one particular deal
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: Sources said that the Montreal Canadiens inquired about Matthew Knies, Nazem Kadri, Rasmus Ristolainen, among others before the March 6th trade deadline. still doesn’t know for sure who GM Kent Hughes was talking about when he said he was discussing something significant.
“I think that’s fair,” Hughes said about the proposed trade target still not being identified in the media. “It’s still a mystery.

“But I don’t think I said anything that day (after the deadline) that was novel or unique. There’s a whole slew of people that continue to pursue trades until the deadline. The Canadiens are more than one player away from being a legit Stanley Cup contender.
