On the Pittsburgh Penguins …
Robert Laflamme of NHL.com: Marc-Andre Fleury sat on the bench as Matt Murray led the Penguins to the Stanley Cup. Fleury has three years left on his deal at a $5.75 million cap hit and a no-movement clause. He plans on winning his starting job back.
“I love Pittsburgh, and the Penguins are my team; I want to stay with them for the rest of my career,” Fleury said. “I had some good conversations with management after the season. Nothing is written in stone. I want to come to camp ready to win my job back. I have to get back to the same level of play and help the team, win games.”
Since he has a no-movement clause, the Penguins would have to protect him in the expansion draft unless Fleury gave them consent to expose him. The Penguins will have to make a decision with their goaltenders sooner or later. In the meantime, Fleury thinks they can co-exist.
On the Detroit Red Wings …
Ansar Khan of MLive: (mailbag) It is a bit surprising that free agent defenseman Kyle Quincey hasn’t signed anywhere yet. Khan thinks Quincey may have wanted to sign with the Avalanche where he resides in the offseason, but their blueline appears to be full. The Devils have only five defenseman on their roster. Maybe Quincey has been looking for more money or term than teams have been willing to go.
Khan doesn’t think the Red Wings would be interested in free agent defenseman James Wisniewski anymore, even though they could use a puck moving defenseman. GM Ken Holland is looking for a top-three defenseman and not a No. 4 to 6 guy. The Wings may be looking for someone younger with a higher upside. They would have to move out salary if they signed a free agent.
On Antoine Vermette …
Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Antoine Vermette might have to accept a PTO, but he can still be a decent third- or fourth-line center at a good price.
