Montreal Canadiens GM may not have been hinting about Matthew Knies in his post-trade deadline presser

The Leafs Nation: David Pagnotta is clearing up some info on the Matthew Knies rumors to the Montreal Canadiens before the trade deadline. Knies may not have been the piece that Canadiens GM Kent Hughes was referring to. If you can get the equivalent to three first-round picks for Knies, you have to listen.

Nick Alberga: “All right, you want to clear up some, some conversation from the deadline. Like, I got cousins in Montreal asking me for Matthew Knies Habs jersey. How close was that? Was Knies really on the block? Like, what do you, what’s the fallout from all this, Dave? I can’t handle it anymore.”

Pagnotta: “I believe that the Canadians and Leafs did discuss Matthew Knies. I think OEL was brought up at some point earlier. I don’t think that’s the player the Canadians were close on. I’ve gotten a lot of ‘No’s’ on that. That, that was the Hab target that Kent Hughes was referring to in a significant deal. So unless everybody is lying, it doesn’t sound like Knies was the guy that the Habs were working on fully.

NHL Rumors: Johnston and Dreger on Maple Leafs Matthew Knies

Now, there were teams that were talking to Toronto all week. And if you’re getting the equivalent of three first-round assets back then, I think you have to consider it, or look at it.

That was the price for (Jordan) Kyrou. It was four pieces for (Robert) Thomas. Similar to what Quinn Hughes got from Minnesota, which was three guys that were drafted in first round and then another first-round pick. So four pieces. That was the price for Thomas.

I think it was three of those pieces for a guy like Kyrou, and I think Knies fit into that three-piece prong. And if they’re, you know, a team willing to pay that, then you got to listen.
